The map

About this Fountain Valley map poster

Fountain Valley lies in western Orange County, between Huntington Beach and Santa Ana. On the map it is a tidy suburban grid, divided by arterial roads spaced a mile apart. Each square contains curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs. The San Diego Freeway cuts through the city at an angle, and the Santa Ana River channel forms its eastern edge.

The name comes from the artesian wells that once brought groundwater to the surface here, when the area was farmland. The city was incorporated in 1957, during the rapid postwar growth of Orange County, and its layout reflects that era of planned subdivisions.

In the northern part of the city is Mile Square Regional Park, a large square of lakes, sports fields and golf courses that was once a military airfield. It is one of the most distinctive shapes on the Orange County map. A Fountain Valley map poster shows the park, the river channel and the grid of mile-long boulevards.
