Guelma lies in a broad basin in northeastern Algeria, on the plain of the Seybouse River, with mountain ranges rising on several sides. From above, the town has a compact centre that spreads over gently sloping ground toward the river valley, with farmland beyond. The hills around it form the outer frame of the map, and the roads follow the valley toward Annaba and the coast.
The site was the Roman town of Calama, and its theatre, restored in the early twentieth century, still stands inside the modern city. The later colonial town was laid out on a fairly regular plan. Its straight streets and rectangular blocks are still visible at the centre, surrounded by newer districts that follow the terrain more loosely.

The region is also known for its thermal springs, including Hammam Debagh to the west, and the roads leading to them add more lines to the composition.
