The map

About this Fribourg map poster

Fribourg sits on the border between French- and German-speaking Switzerland, and the city itself is officially bilingual. Its old town occupies a rocky promontory inside a tight bend of the Sarine River, known in German as the Saane. The river has cut a deep gorge through the sandstone, and the city's streets climb steeply from the lower quarters by the water to the upper town.

The medieval core is one of the largest and best preserved in Switzerland, and the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Nicholas rises above it. Bridges have always been central to Fribourg's plan: old wooden and stone crossings in the lower town, the Zähringen Bridge high above, and the modern Poya Bridge, opened in 2014, spanning the valley beside the old town.

A Fribourg map poster is defined by that looping river. The meanders draw bold curves across the frame, the old town clings to the high ground inside them, and the bridges stitch the two sides together. There is even a funicular, running since 1899 and powered by the city's wastewater, which links the lower Neuveville quarter to the upper town.

01

Sarine meanders

The river loops sharply around the old town, creating dramatic curves and steep banks. They give the whole map its shape and make it instantly recognisable.

02

Bridges

From old crossings in the lower town to the high Poya Bridge, a series of spans ties the city together across its gorge. Each one is a distinct line over the water.

03

Old town promontory

The medieval centre fills a rocky spur inside the river bend. Its dense web of streets, lanes and squares around the cathedral rewards a close look.
