About this Gengqing map poster
Gengqing is the seat of Dêgê County in the Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of western Sichuan, at well over 3,000 metres. From above, the town is long and narrow. It follows a river through a deep valley, with mountain slopes rising sharply on both sides. Streets run lengthwise with the water, and the few cross streets are short, cut off quickly by the terrain.
The town is best known for the Dêgê Parkhang, a printing house founded in the eighteenth century where Tibetan scriptures are still printed by hand from carved wooden blocks. It remains one of the most important centres of Tibetan printing, and pilgrims walk circuits around it each day. Monasteries and older quarters sit on the valley floor and lower slopes.
