The district

About this Gion map poster

Gion lies on the east bank of the Kamo River in Kyoto, stretching from the river toward the foot of the Higashiyama hills. Shijō Street runs through it from west to east and ends at the vermilion gate of Yasaka Shrine, forming the district's main axis on the map. North and south of it, the streets break into narrow lanes lined with wooden machiya townhouses and teahouses.

Gion developed around Yasaka Shrine, serving its visitors and pilgrims, and grew into Kyoto's best-known district of geiko and maiko. Hanamikoji Street, running south from Shijō, is its most famous lane, while the Shirakawa canal, with its willows and stone-edged banks, winds through the northern part. Each July the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's best-known festivals, is held by the shrine.

The Minamiza kabuki theatre stands at the western end of Shijō near the river, and Kenninji, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple, lies just to the south. A Gion map poster captures this compact network of alleys, the curve of the canal and the line of the Kamo River, framing one of the most recognisable historic quarters in Japan.

01

Shijō axis

Shijō Street crosses the district from the Kamo River to Yasaka Shrine, a straight line that divides Gion and anchors the smaller streets on either side.

02

Shirakawa canal

A narrow canal curves through the northern part of Gion, drawn on the map as a slender, meandering line among the tight blocks of teahouses and homes.

03

Kamo River

The river runs north to south along the district's western edge, and its broad channel and embankments give the map a clear natural boundary.

Why Gion

A map that means something

Gion is often the place people remember most from a visit to Kyoto: an evening walk down Hanamikoji, the lanterns at Yasaka, the quiet of the canal. A map of the district records that experience with restraint, in lines rather than pictures.

Change the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps adding the date of your trip, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free watermarked preview shows the result before you buy.
