The map

About this Granada map poster

Granada was founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua, also called Cocibolca. It is one of the oldest European cities on the American mainland. Its plan is a classic Spanish colonial grid centred on the main square and cathedral. Calle La Calzada runs straight from the centre down to the lakeshore.

The city had a turbulent past. It was raided by pirates in the colonial era and largely burned in 1856 by the forces of the American filibuster William Walker. It was rebuilt in the style still seen today. South of the city, the Mombacho volcano rises, and at its foot the lake is scattered with Las Isletas, several hundred small volcanic islands.

A Granada map poster brings together the regular colonial blocks, the open line of the lakeshore and the clusters of islets offshore. That is an unusually rich composition for a single sheet. It is a natural choice for travellers who stayed in the old town and for Nicaraguans with ties to the city.

Colonial grid

Square blocks spread from the central plaza and cathedral in a strict Spanish colonial pattern. It is a clear, even texture at the centre of the print.

02

La Calzada to the lake

This straight pedestrian street leads from the centre to the shore of Lake Nicaragua. It is the main axis linking the city to the water.

03

Las Isletas

South of the city, hundreds of small volcanic islands sit in the lake near Mombacho. They make a scattered, delicate pattern on the water.

Why Granada

A map that means something

Granada is a common choice for people who travelled through Nicaragua, studied Spanish there or have family in the city. A title with the trip dates or a personal line turns the print into a keepsake. The coordinates line can be adjusted as well.

The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Paper and Sand suit the colonial architecture. Blueprint brings out the lake, the grid and the islets like an old nautical chart.
