The map

About this Tegucigalpa map poster

Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, lies in a valley surrounded by pine-covered mountains. Its streets climb the slopes in every direction, so the map shows a dense core in the valley floor and irregular neighbourhoods spreading up the hillsides, following ridges and gullies rather than a grid.

The Choluteca River runs through the city, separating historic Tegucigalpa on the east bank from Comayagüela on the west. The two were joined as a single capital district in the twentieth century. Above the city rises El Picacho hill, with its large statue of Christ, and to the south lies Toncontín airport, known for its difficult approach between the hills.

A Tegucigalpa map poster shows the valley and the hills that contain it. In black and white, the curved streets of the slopes, the river and the older colonial centre form a detailed, lively composition.

01

Choluteca River

The river winds through the centre, dividing Tegucigalpa from Comayagüela and giving the map a clear line through its middle.

02

Hillside streets

Neighbourhoods climb the surrounding slopes along curving roads, so the outer map looks more like a contour drawing than a grid.

03

El Picacho

The hill north of the centre rises above the city, marked by its park and statue, and forms a green break in the dense street pattern.
