The map
La Ceiba stretches along the northern Caribbean coast of Honduras in the department of Atlántida. On a map it is a long, low strip of streets pressed between the sea and a mountain wall: the Nombre de Dios range, with Pico Bonito National Park, rises steeply only a few kilometres inland. Rivers such as the Cangrejal run down from those mountains and cross the coastal plain to the sea.
The city grew in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a banana port, when fruit companies built docks and rail lines here. Today it is best known as a gateway: ferries leave for the Bay Islands of Roatán and Utila, and rafting on the Cangrejal draws visitors inland. Every May the city holds a large carnival in honour of San Isidro.
A La Ceiba map poster frames a place shaped by water from two directions, the sea in front and mountain rivers behind. The grid runs parallel to the beach, broken by river mouths and by streets that once led to the docks. It is a simple, readable map with a strong horizontal rhythm and a clear sense of place.
The coast runs almost straight along the northern edge of the city, giving the poster a clean boundary between the street grid and the open sea.
Flowing down from the mountains east of the centre, the river cuts across the coastal plain to reach the Caribbean, drawn as a winding line through the grid.
Behind the city the slopes of Pico Bonito rise quickly, leaving the southern part of the map largely empty and showing how narrow the coastal strip really is.
