The map

About this Grand-Bassam map poster

Grand-Bassam lies east of Abidjan on the Ivorian coast, where the Comoé River reaches the sea, and its map is shaped almost entirely by water. The historic quarter runs along a thin strip of land between the lagoon and the Atlantic. The newer town sits on the mainland shore, across a short bridge.

The town was the colonial capital of Côte d'Ivoire at the end of the nineteenth century, and its old quarter became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. On a map, that quarter appears as a regular grid of streets squeezed onto the sandbar. The beach runs straight along its southern edge, and the lagoon's softer shoreline lies to the north.

A Grand-Bassam map poster captures this unusual geography cleanly. Two long bands of water enclose the historic grid, the river mouth breaks the coastline, and the modern districts spread inland in a looser pattern. Few towns show their history and setting so directly in their street plan, which makes it especially satisfying to see in black and white.

01

Colonial quarter

The old government and trading district follows a neat street grid on the sandbar. This UNESCO-listed group of buildings reads as a compact, orderly block between lagoon and sea.

02

Atlantic shoreline

A long, almost straight beach runs along the southern edge of the town. It gives the poster a clean horizontal line that contrasts with the irregular lagoon shores behind it.

03

Lagoon crossing

A bridge links the historic strip with the mainland districts. Around it, lagoon channels and the Comoé estuary open out, drawn as broad pale shapes.

Why Grand-Bassam

Many Ivorians value Grand-Bassam as a place of national history, and visitors know it as a weekend coast. A map poster suits both. It records the exact shape of the town between lagoon and sea for anyone who has lived there, studied its past or simply spent time on its beach.
