The map
Hämeenlinna follows the shores of Lake Vanajavesi in southern Finland. On a map the lake runs through the middle of the urban area as a long, irregular channel. The town centre sits on the eastern bank, laid out in a regular grid of blocks around a central square. Bridges and a railway embankment cross the water, and forest and smaller lakes surround the built-up area on all sides.
The town grew around Häme Castle, a brick fortress begun in the late thirteenth century on the lakeshore just north of today's centre. The town itself was granted its charter in 1639. Hämeenlinna is also the birthplace of Jean Sibelius. His childhood home stands near the market square and is now a museum.
On a Hämeenlinna map poster the grid of the centre stands out clearly against the winding lake and the wooded islands. To the north, the Aulanko nature park shows as a mass of paths and small ponds. The motorway to Helsinki and Tampere runs along the western side of the town and gives the layout a firm straight edge.

The lake runs through the town as a narrow, branching body of water. Bridges and embankments cross it, and its long shoreline gives the map its flowing shape.
