The map
Ḩajjah is the capital of the governorate of the same name in north-western Yemen. It stands high in the mountains that rise between the Red Sea coastal plain and the interior plateau. Nothing about its layout is flat or regular. The streets follow ridgelines and wind around the slopes, and buildings sit wherever the terrain gives them a foothold.
On a map this terrain produces a network of curving roads that loop back on themselves, climb in switchbacks and fork along spurs of rock. Built-up areas stretch out along crests and thin out where the ground drops away. The town's hilltop position has made it a defensive site for a long time, and the high ground at its centre was used for fortification.
A Ḩajjah map poster turns this vertical landscape into line. Even without shading, the pattern shows the elevation: roads crowd close where the slope is gentle and spread apart where it is steep, and access routes snake down toward the valleys. The result looks nothing like a lowland grid, and it records a place shaped first by its mountains.
Main roads follow the crests of the ridges, so the densest part of town traces the high ground. The streets branch where spurs of rock split off.
Routes into town zigzag down the steep slopes. Their tight folded curves are one of the most striking graphic features in the composition.
The town lies in the mountainous belt between the coastal plain and the plateau. That terrain explains why no street runs straight for long.
