About this Hargeysa map poster
Hargeysa lies on a high plateau in the north-west of the Somali region, and its map is organised around a seasonal riverbed that runs through the centre. For much of the year the channel is dry sand, and on the map it appears as a pale band dividing the city into northern and southern halves. Neighbourhoods spread out on both sides in loose grids, with main roads leading toward the coast and the Ethiopian border.
Hargeysa is the capital of Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991 and runs its own government, though it is not internationally recognised. The city was heavily damaged in the late 1980s, and a MiG fighter jet mounted as a monument in the centre recalls that period. Outside the city, the Laas Geel caves hold some of the best-preserved Neolithic rock paintings in Africa.
