The map
Harlingen is an old port town on the coast of Friesland, facing the Wadden Sea. For centuries it was the province's gateway to the sea, and today ferries leave from its harbour for the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. The town still keeps its seafaring layout, with inner harbours and canals running through a compact historic centre.
The map shows a town arranged around water. A sea dike runs along the western edge, and behind it the harbour basins reach into town. Canals lined with brick houses and warehouses cross the old centre. To the east, the Van Harinxma Canal heads inland towards Leeuwarden, a long straight line leaving the tight cluster of historic streets.
A Harlingen map poster captures that mix of open sea and enclosed town. The Wadden shallows sit on one side as broad empty space. On the other, the fine web of canals, quays and narrow streets fills the old centre before giving way to newer neighbourhoods and the flat, open polder.

A continuous dike separates the town from the Wadden Sea. On the poster it draws a firm line between the streets and the open water.
The Van Harinxma Canal runs east from Harlingen towards the provincial capital. It leaves town as a long, straight line across the flat Frisian land.

Why Harlingen
Harlingen suits island-hoppers who remember the ferry out, sailors who've moored in its harbours and Frisians with family on these quays. The meeting of sea and canal town makes it a map with real character.
You can personalise the title and subtitle, and add a date to the coordinates line, whether for a crossing, a mooring or a family event. There are five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
