The map
Herceg Novi sits at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor on the Montenegrin coast, facing the open Adriatic. From above, it is a long ribbon of town following the shoreline, climbing steeply up the slopes of the Orjen mountains behind. Its streets run in parallel terraces, joined by stairways and switchbacks rather than straight crossings.
The small walled old town sits above the water, with a clock tower at one gate and fortifications such as Forte Mare near the sea and Kanli Kula higher up. King Tvrtko I of Bosnia founded the town in the fourteenth century, and it later passed through Ottoman, Venetian and Austrian rule.
A Herceg Novi map poster works because of that terracing. The coastline draws a clean edge, the horizontal streets stack up the hillside like contour lines, and the bay opens out beside them. Along the shore, a waterfront promenade links the town with neighbouring settlements such as Igalo and Savina, and on the map it appears as one long, uninterrupted line.

Herceg Novi faces the narrow opening where the Bay of Kotor meets the Adriatic. The water fills a large part of the composition and frames the coastline with a clear, clean edge.
The compact historic core sits just above the harbour, guarded by fortifications including Forte Mare by the water and Kanli Kula above. It appears on the map as a tight cluster of lanes.

Why Herceg Novi
Herceg Novi stays with people who have spent a summer on its steps, and the map shows exactly why: a town built into a mountainside at the edge of a remarkable bay. The strong coastline makes it one of the more striking coastal prints.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be changed to mark a holiday, a family home on the coast or an anniversary. Five styles are available: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
