About this Hollola map poster
Hollola is a municipality in Päijät-Häme that wraps around the western and southern sides of Lahti. From above it hardly looks like a single town. You see lakeshore, forest, fields and villages, with the roads following the high ground between bodies of water. The shapes of the lakes, with their narrow inlets and small islands, dominate most of the map.
The landscape here was shaped by the last ice age. The Salpausselkä ridges run through the region, and roads and settlements have long followed their dry, level crests. The lakes to the north belong to the wider Vesijärvi system. Their shorelines are irregular and heavily indented, so in black and white they appear as bold white shapes with pale borders.
Hollola's medieval stone church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, stands near the lakeshore and is one of the largest surviving churches of its period in Finland.
