The map
Jaito is a town in the Faridkot district of Punjab, in the flat, intensively farmed plain of the Malwa region. The landscape here is dominated by wheat and rice fields, irrigation channels and long straight roads, and the town appears on the map as a dense cluster of streets set in that open agricultural country.
A railway line runs through the town, and the older bazaar streets gather near it in a compact, irregular pattern. Newer neighbourhoods extend outward along the main roads in straighter lines. Beyond the last buildings, the map opens into the regular rectangles of fields and the canals that serve them.
A Jaito map poster also marks a place with a notable role in modern Punjabi history. The town is associated with the Jaito Morcha of the 1920s, a major episode in the Sikh reform movement, and with Gurdwara Gangsar, which remains an important site for the town and its visitors.
A railway line crosses the town in a straight path, with the older commercial streets clustered around it, marking its long role as a local trading centre.
Near the centre the streets become short, narrow and irregular, forming the dense heart of the town where markets and older housing sit.
Beyond the town the map opens into the broad, flat farmland of Punjab, a quiet field that lets the compact settlement stand out clearly.
