The map
Jhawarian is a town in the central Punjab plain of Pakistan, in the fertile country between the Jhelum and Chenab rivers. From above, the landscape is almost entirely flat. The town forms a dense, irregular cluster of lanes and courtyards, and a few main roads cut through it toward neighbouring settlements.
What surrounds the town matters as much as the town itself. Irrigation canals and distributaries run in long, straight lines across the plain, and the field boundaries follow them, so the countryside looks like a patchwork of rectangles. Smaller villages sit like islands in this pattern, linked by narrow tracks.
A Jhawarian map poster reads as a study in contrast. The tight, organic street fabric of the town is set against the measured, engineered geometry of irrigated farmland. It is a quiet map, but a revealing one, showing how water and agriculture have shaped settlement across this part of Punjab.
The centre is a compact knot of narrow lanes and closely built blocks. Seen from above, it has the organic feel of towns that grew over generations.
Long, straight canals cross the surrounding plain and give the landscape its structure. Fields and tracks line up along them in orderly rows.
Small villages dot the farmland around the town, connected by thin roads and paths that radiate outward and tie the local countryside together.
