The map
Kaifeng lies on the flat North China Plain, a short distance south of the Yellow River. As Bianjing, it was the capital of the Northern Song dynasty and one of the largest cities in the world of its time. That life is recorded in the famous scroll Along the River During the Qingming Festival. Repeated floods have buried earlier layers of the city beneath silt.
The Ming-era city walls still enclose a nearly rectangular old town, one of the best-preserved circuits in China. Inside the walls are lakes, including Longting and the waters near the Iron Pagoda. The pagoda's brown glazed tiles make it look like iron from a distance. New districts now extend well beyond the walls, especially to the west.
A Kaifeng map poster emphasises this enclosed historic core. The wall line traces a clean rectangle, and lakes and parks open up inside it. Streets align to the old orientation. It is a rare city where the structure of a medieval capital can still be read in the modern street plan, set against the broad, flat plain.
The surviving walls form a near-rectangle around the old town. They create a sharp border between the historic streets inside and the modern city outside.
Longting Lake and neighbouring waters lie within the walls. They leave open shapes in the northern part of the old town.
The river's embanked course runs north of the city. It is a reminder of the floods that shaped Kaifeng's long history.
