The map

About this Kāmārhāti map poster

Kāmārhāti stretches along the east bank of the Hooghly River just north of Kolkata. It belongs to the continuous urban belt that follows the river upstream. On a map it appears as a long, narrow strip. The water lies to the west, a busy trunk road runs roughly parallel through the middle, and a railway line runs to the east, with dense lanes filling the spaces between.

Like much of this riverbank, the town grew up around the jute mills of the colonial era. The mills took the flat land beside the water for their compounds, jetties and workers' housing. Some of those large rectangular plots still stand out among the smaller, irregular blocks of later neighbourhoods, including the areas around Belgharia and Dakshineswar.

At the southern end, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple stands on the riverbank close to two bridges across the Hooghly. It is a well-known place of pilgrimage associated with Ramakrishna. A Kāmārhāti map poster traces this riverside ribbon, where the Hooghly, the road and the railway give structure to otherwise dense streets.

01

Hooghly riverbank

The broad river forms the town's western edge. Ghats, old mill sites and temple grounds line the bank, and the far shore sits across the water.

02

Twin bridges

Near Dakshineswar, two bridges cross the Hooghly side by side. These strong parallel lines link this bank with the western side of the metropolitan area.

03

Road and rail

A major trunk road and a suburban railway both run north to south through the town. They frame its neighbourhoods and tie them to central Kolkata.
