The map
Katesh is the administrative centre of Hanang District in Tanzania's Manyara Region. It lies at the base of Mount Hanang, a solitary extinct volcano and one of the country's highest peaks. On the map, the town is a modest cluster of streets along the main road, with the mountain's slopes rising steeply just past its edge and filling one side of the frame.
The street pattern here is not a planned grid; it follows the land. Roads and paths spread outward toward farmland and villages, bending where the ground rises and running straighter across the flatter plain. Seasonal watercourses coming down from the mountain cut through the area as thin, winding lines, giving the map an organic, uneven texture.
The surrounding district is home to farming and herding communities, including the Barabaig, known for their cattle-keeping traditions. A Katesh map poster is really about the relationship between the town and the mountain: a small settlement whose shape comes from the landscape rising around it.
The volcano rises right beside the town, and its slopes decide the direction of the streets, streams and paths across the whole map.
The principal road runs through Katesh as its clearest line, linking the district centre with Babati and the rest of the region.
Streams and seasonal channels coming down from Hanang cross the town and its fields, drawing thin, winding lines across the lower slopes.
