The map

About this Katori-shi map poster

Katori-shi lies in northeastern Chiba Prefecture along the south bank of the Tone River, one of Japan's largest rivers, where Chiba meets Ibaraki. Much of the city is flat, low land given over to rice paddies, cut by drainage canals and embankments, while wooded hills rise to the south. Its historic centre is Sawara, a former river-trade town.

Sawara grew wealthy in the Edo period shipping goods to Edo along the Tone, and the Ono River, which flows through the old town, is still lined with wooden merchant houses and storehouses. It was the home of Inō Tadataka, who later surveyed Japan's coastline and produced the first accurate maps of the country. Katori Jingu, one of the oldest shrines in eastern Japan, stands in forest on the city's hills.

A Katori-shi map poster is fitting for a place linked to Japanese cartography. The print shows the canal running through Sawara, the broad Tone and its levees, and the grid of paddy fields, with the shrine forest as a quiet open space among the roads. In monochrome the balance of water, fields and old streets is especially clear.

01

Sawara canal streets

The Ono River runs through the old town in a narrow channel with streets on both banks, a small but distinctive line at the heart of the map.

02

The Tone River

Along the northern edge the wide Tone and its embankments form a long, strong band that dominates the composition and marks the prefectural border.

03

Paddy field grid

The lowlands are divided into rectangular rice fields and straight farm roads, creating a fine, regular texture that contrasts with the winding lanes of the hills.

Why Katori-shi
