The map
Kebri Dahar is a town in the Somali Region of eastern Ethiopia and an administrative centre for the surrounding area. It lies in the arid lowlands of the Ogaden, a vast semi-desert of low scrub and seasonal watercourses. From above, the town is a patch of streets and compounds on a flat, almost featureless landscape.
Pastoralists use much of the surrounding country, and the roads out of town connect it with the herding settlements and trading towns of the region. Within Kebri Dahar, blocks are generally broad and low, with walled compounds and wide unpaved streets. The edge of the town fades gradually into scrubland rather than stopping at a clear boundary.
A Kebri Dahar map poster shows a town defined by space. The lines are sparse, the plain around them is wide, and the roads run toward distant horizons. The result is a restrained, almost abstract image. It is a meaningful one for Somali families from the Ogaden and for aid workers or public servants who spent time in the town.
Streets are wide and blocks are generous, so the town is drawn with relatively few lines and plenty of white space between them.
Routes leaving the town run long and straight across the plain. They link Kebri Dahar with other settlements and give the map strong directional lines.
Instead of a sharp boundary, the built-up area thins into scattered compounds and scrub, so the poster fades naturally from town to open land.
