The map

About this Kontiolahti map poster

Kontiolahti lies in North Karelia in eastern Finland, just north of the regional centre of Joensuu. Like much of the Finnish lakeland, it is more forest and water than town. On a map the main settlements appear as small clusters along roads and shores, separated by broad areas of woodland and irregular lakes.

The municipality is known across the winter sports world for its biathlon stadium, which has hosted World Cup races and the World Championships. The area's forests also carry long networks of ski and hiking trails, and its many lakes shape how roads and villages are laid out.

A Kontiolahti map poster is a study in spacing and shoreline. Lakes spread across the frame in fragmented shapes, roads trace the land between them, and residential areas gather in a few places, often near Joensuu or along the water. The overall effect is calm, open and very Finnish.

Lake shapes

Many lakes and bays spread across the municipality with irregular, branching outlines typical of eastern Finland, and on the map they form the dominant pattern.

02

Biathlon stadium

The biathlon centre is marked by a tight loop of tracks and trails in the forest, a sign of Kontiolahti's international role in winter sports.

03

Village clusters

Housing gathers in several small centres along roads and shores, leaving large areas of forest between them and keeping the map light and open.
