The map

About this La Crosse map poster

La Crosse sits on the east bank of the Mississippi, where the Black River and the La Crosse River join it. From above, the city is a broad grid of streets pressed between the river and the bluffs to the east. The Mississippi itself spreads into a web of channels, sloughs and wooded islands, crossed by bridges to Minnesota.

Grandad Bluff rises about 600 feet above the city. Its lookout is the classic place to see the whole grid laid out below. La Crosse is home to the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, and the city's Oktoberfest has been a large autumn event for decades.

A La Crosse map poster shows two very different textures side by side. The orderly city grid fills the flat land, while the river floodplain is a tangle of water and islands. Marshland along the La Crosse River breaks the grid in the north, and the bluffs close off the view to the east.

01

Three rivers meet

The Mississippi, Black and La Crosse rivers come together along the city's western edge. They form a complex network of channels, backwaters and islands.

02

Bluff-edged grid

The street grid stretches east until it meets the steep bluffs. There it breaks into curving roads that climb to the ridgetop.

03

Bridges to Minnesota

The bridges crossing the Mississippi draw bold lines over the floodplain. They link the city to La Crescent and the Minnesota shore.
