Grid on a slope
The central streets keep to a rough Spanish-style grid, but the terrain bends and interrupts it. The result is a town plan that looks orderly yet slightly off-balance.

The map
La Peca is a town in Bagua province, in the Amazonas region of northern Peru, where the Andes begin to drop toward the Amazon lowlands. The terrain is steep and irregular. The town's streets follow a rough grid wherever the ground allows it, then give way to roads that bend to follow the slopes.
From above, La Peca sits in a green landscape of ridges and small valleys. Rural roads lead out toward farms and hamlets scattered across the hillsides, and streams cut down through the terrain toward the larger river valleys below. On a map these features show as a mix of straight town blocks and long winding lines.
The region around Bagua is warm and agricultural, well known for coffee, cacao and rice grown in its valleys. A La Peca map poster portrays a small Andean town in its true shape: a compact centre set among mountains, with roads threading out into the countryside.
The central streets keep to a rough Spanish-style grid, but the terrain bends and interrupts it. The result is a town plan that looks orderly yet slightly off-balance.
Roads leaving La Peca wind across the hillsides toward farms and villages. Their curves make the edges of the poster lively and full of movement.
Small watercourses run down through the landscape toward the valleys below. They add natural lines that divide the hills and frame the town from several sides.
