The map

About this La Teste-de-Buch map poster

La Teste-de-Buch is one of the largest communes in mainland France by area. It stretches along the southern shore of Arcachon Bay in Gironde. Its town centre sits beside Arcachon itself, and the two built-up areas run together along the water. To the south and west, the map opens into the vast managed pine forest of the Landes, crossed by straight forestry tracks.

The coastline is the most striking part of the map. Small harbours and oyster ports notch the bay shore, and channels wind through the salt meadows. Toward the ocean, the Dune du Pilat rises at the mouth of the bay; it is the tallest sand dune in Europe. The winding residential lanes of Pyla-sur-Mer sit in the pines just behind it, in contrast to the older grid of the town centre.

Further south, the commune reaches the northern shore of the lake of Cazaux-Sanguinet, so a single frame can hold bay, ocean and freshwater. A La Teste-de-Buch map poster works at many scales. You can close in on the harbour streets, or pull back to show how thin the band of settlement is between the water and the forest.

01

Dune du Pilat

At the entrance to Arcachon Bay, Europe's tallest sand dune forms a long, pale ridge between the pine forest and the Atlantic. It is one of the most recognisable shapes on this coast.

02

Oyster harbours

The bay shore is lined with small ports and basins used by oyster farmers. Their jetties and channels draw a fine, irregular edge along the water.

03

Landes forest tracks

Inland, long straight tracks and firebreaks cross the planted maritime pine forest. It is a rare example of ruler-straight lines in open country.

Why La Teste-de-Buch

A map that means something

Many people know this coast from summer holidays, oyster lunches or a climb up the dune, and a map of it keeps those days in view. Water, forest and sand together make a composition that feels light on a wall.

Personalise the title, add a subtitle such as the year of a family holiday, and set the coordinates to a favourite beach. Sand and Paper suit the coast, and Blueprint brings out the channels. Order a matte print with an optional frame, or download six print sizes for $9.
