The island

About this Lampedusa map poster

Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie Islands. It lies in the Mediterranean closer to Tunisia than to Sicily and is the southernmost part of Italy. On a map it is a slender island running east to west, a flat limestone plateau that tilts gently to the south. The north coast drops in high cliffs, while the south shore is cut by a series of coves and small bays.

The only town, also called Lampedusa, sits around its harbour on the southeast coast. Its compact street grid lies next to the airport runway, which runs almost to the edge of town. West of the town a single road follows the plateau, with tracks branching off toward the coves. Beyond the town the land is dry and open, with low stone walls and scrub.

The small Isola dei Conigli lies off the south coast, across a shallow stretch of water from Rabbit Beach, one of the places where loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest. A Lampedusa map poster shows a small island with a clear structure: one town, one road, cliffs to the north and a row of coves to the south.

01

Isola dei Conigli

A small islet sits just off the south coast, separated from the beach by a narrow, shallow channel. It is a delicate detail on the lower edge of the map.

02

Harbour and airport

The town, the harbour and the airport runway sit side by side at the southeast end. The runway is a long straight line beside the curve of the harbour.

03

Northern cliffs

The north coast is a steep limestone edge with few breaks. It gives the island a clean, straight top edge and a scalloped bottom edge.
