About this Le François map poster
Le François is a commune on the Atlantic coast of Martinique, on the island's windward side. From above, its shoreline is one of the most broken on the island. Coves and headlands follow one another, and mangroves line the inner bays. Offshore, a scatter of small islets sits inside a barrier of reef. The town itself lies at the head of a sheltered bay, and its streets gather near the waterfront.
The shallow water off Le François is known locally for its fonds blancs. These are sandbanks where the sea is only knee-deep, far from shore, and people go out by boat to stand in them. Inland, the land rises into green hills cut by winding departmental roads. The commune is also home to Habitation Clément, a former sugar estate and rum distillery that is now open to visitors.
