The map

About this Le Lamentin map poster

Le Lamentin is the second-largest commune of Martinique. It sits on the flat land at the head of the Bay of Fort-de-France, just east of the capital, and its name recalls the manatee, or lamantin, once found in these waters. On the map the commune runs from a mangrove-fringed shore to green hills inland, and the long straight line of the island's international airport cuts across the lowland.

Much of the island's commerce and industry is concentrated here, and the map shows it. Wide roads, roundabouts and large blocks of commercial land sit beside older neighbourhoods and the town centre. Small rivers wind through the plain toward the bay, where the coastline breaks up into the fine, irregular pattern of mangrove channels.

A Le Lamentin map poster captures a place most visitors to Martinique pass through first, landing at Aimé Césaire International Airport, but rarely see from above. The mix of runway, shoreline, highway and hills makes for a varied composition, and the bay adds a large, quiet area of water on the western side of the frame.

01

Airport runway

Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport lies within the commune. Its long runway is one of the most distinctive straight lines on the whole map, easy to spot at any print size.

02

Mangrove shoreline

Where the land meets the Bay of Fort-de-France, the coast breaks up into mangrove and small channels, giving the edge of the poster a fine, feathered texture.

03

Lowland and hills

The flat plain near the bay is laced with roads and rivers. Inland it gives way to rising green hills, where the street pattern loosens and follows the contours of the land.

Why Le Lamentin

A map that means something

Le Lamentin is home to many Martiniquais and the first stop for most travellers, which makes it a meaningful place to put on a wall. The map fits bay, runway and hills into a single frame and shows how compact and varied the island is.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with an arrival date or a family name, and pick one of five styles. Blueprint and Sand suit this coastline especially well. Digital files are $9 for six sizes, and printed posters come on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
