About this Les Ulis map poster
Les Ulis is one of the youngest towns in Île-de-France. It was built from the late 1960s on farmland of the Courtabœuf plateau in Essonne, and it became a commune in its own right in 1977, formed from parts of Orsay and Bures-sur-Yvette. On a map that recent origin is obvious. There is no old village core, only a coherent plan drawn up in a single generation.
The street layout reflects the planning ideas of its era. Traffic runs on looping distributor roads, while housing blocks, schools and shops are linked by footpaths and raised walkways, so the road network and the walking network form two separate drawings laid over each other. Large green spaces fill the gaps between the residential quarters and soften the geometry.
Next to the town spread the broad sheds and car parks of the Courtabœuf business park, one of the largest in the region, and the A10 motorway passes nearby.
