About this Letterkenny map poster
Letterkenny rises from the low ground by the River Swilly onto a ridge. The map shows that slope clearly. Main Street, long and steep, runs along the hill, and the side streets drop sharply toward the river flats and the newer retail and road network below. The water sits at the bottom edge of the town and opens into the long inlet of Lough Swilly.
It is the largest town in County Donegal and grew as a market town in the plantation period of the early seventeenth century. Main Street is often described as one of the longest in Ireland. The spire of St Eunan's Cathedral stands on the high ground, although on a street map the hill shows up through the way roads bend around it rather than through any building.
