The map

About this Loma Plata map poster

Loma Plata is the main town of the Menno Colony, founded in 1927 by Mennonite settlers who came to the Paraguayan Chaco from Canada. It lies in Boquerón Department, in a landscape of dry forest and grassland that stays flat to the horizon. On a map it looks planned and orderly, like a settlement drawn onto an empty sheet.

The streets form a regular grid of generous blocks, and straight roads lead out of town in every direction to the colony's villages and farms. Around them, the land is divided into large rectangular fields and pastures. The geometry continues well beyond the town and fades only where the remaining dry forest begins.

Dairy farming and cattle ranching built the colony's economy, and its cooperative became a major milk producer for Paraguay. A Loma Plata map poster shows the precision of a place laid out from scratch in a remote region. Every straight line on it reflects a deliberate decision by the people who settled here.

01

Planned town grid

The streets meet at right angles in wide, even blocks. It is one of the clearest examples of deliberate town planning anywhere in the Chaco.

02

Straight colony roads

Long, straight roads lead out of town toward the colony's villages. They divide the land around it into a clear, measured pattern.

03

Chaco field pattern

Rectangular pastures and fields cleared from dry forest give the land around the town a geometric texture. Irregular patches of woodland remain between them.
