The map
Ma‘ale Adummim sits on a series of ridges in the West Bank, east of Jerusalem, at the edge of the Judean Desert. It was established in the 1970s as an Israeli settlement and has grown into one of the largest. On a map its neighbourhoods follow the contours of the hills, with curving roads wrapping around each summit.
The layout is clearly planned. Valleys and open slopes separate the residential districts, and each has its own loop of streets, which gives the town a lobed, almost petal-like shape from above. Main roads connect the districts to the highway between Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley. Further east the land drops toward the Dead Sea.
Beyond the built-up area the land is largely open, with only a few roads crossing the hills. A Ma‘ale Adummim map poster shows the unusual relationship between planned streets and steep terrain. The curving neighbourhood roads form an expressive design that reads very differently from a flat city grid.

The main road between Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley runs past the town. On the map it is a strong line linking westward to the city and eastward toward the Dead Sea.
To the east the built-up area ends abruptly and gives way to open land with few roads. This forms a quiet, empty margin on the poster.
