About this Ma'rib map poster
Ma'rib lies in central Yemen, on the eastern side of the highlands where the land descends toward the desert. The modern city spreads across flat ground, with wide roads and newer districts. Nearby, the old town stands on a raised mound, its tall mud-brick buildings forming a compact, irregular shape that is visible from above.
Ma'rib was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Saba, often linked with the biblical Queen of Sheba. The Great Dam of Ma'rib, built to capture seasonal floods in a wadi, was one of the great engineering works of the ancient world. The temples of Awwam and Barran, part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing, remain nearby.
