The map
McKeesport stands at the confluence of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers, south-east of Pittsburgh. On a map the two rivers form a sharp V, and the city fills the land at and above their meeting point. The downtown grid sits on flatter ground near the water, and residential streets climb the surrounding hills in bending lines.
For much of the twentieth century McKeesport was a major steel and tube-making centre, and the riverbanks were lined with mills and rail yards. It is also remembered for a 1947 debate held here between two young congressmen, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, well before they faced each other in the 1960 presidential race.
A McKeesport map poster brings out the character of the Mon Valley: rivers, bridges, rail lines along the banks, and a street network forced to follow steep terrain. The contrast between the downtown grid and the hillside curves makes it one of the more dramatic small-city maps in western Pennsylvania.
The Youghiogheny joins the Monongahela right at the city, forming a clear V shape that defines the whole composition.
The flat land along the banks once held steel and tube works, and rail lines along the rivers still trace that industrial edge.
Above downtown, streets wind up the slopes and break into irregular blocks. This gives the outer map a textured, contour-like pattern.
