The map
Miaohang is a town in Baoshan District, on the northern side of Shanghai, toward the mouth of the Yangtze. Like much of the Shanghai plain, the land here was once crossed by a dense network of creeks and canals. Many of those waterways survive, and on the map they cut through the district in thin, meandering lines.
In recent decades, the area has changed from farming villages into a suburban part of the city. It now has large residential estates, industrial zones and wide new roads. Those developments appear as large, regular rectangles set against the older, irregular watercourses. Metro and expressway links tie the town into the rest of Shanghai.
A Miaohang map poster shows the new and the old on one sheet. There are big planned blocks and straight arterials, and threading between them are the creeks that predate the city. In monochrome, the contrast becomes very graphic. It is a subject for people who know Shanghai beyond the Bund, in the outer districts where many residents actually live.

Big residential compounds form broad, regular rectangles. Their internal paths and gardens give the print a distinctive large-scale pattern.
Wide, straight roads and expressways cross the town, dividing it into large superblocks that are typical of Shanghai's outer districts.

Why Miaohang
For residents of northern Shanghai, a Miaohang print marks the neighbourhood behind everyday life, such as a first apartment or a family home. You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates with names, dates or both.
Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits the planned superblocks. Noir picks out the thin network of waterways particularly well.
