About this Midyat map poster
Midyat lies on the limestone plateau of Tur Abdin in south-eastern Turkey, east of Mardin. Its map shows two distinct parts: the old town, a dense cluster of stone houses and narrow lanes around churches and mosques, and Estel, the newer administrative centre a short distance away, laid out with straighter streets. Between them, roads cross an open landscape of fields and dry hills.
Tur Abdin is a historic heartland of Syriac Christianity, and Midyat's old quarter is known for honey-coloured stone mansions with carved facades and inner courtyards, some now used as guesthouses and film sets. The ancient Mor Gabriel Monastery, one of the oldest active monasteries in the world, stands in the countryside south-east of the town.
