About this Mocha map poster
Mocha lies on Yemen's Red Sea coast, north of the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. On a map, the coastline runs almost straight, a long clean edge between the sea and the flat coastal plain known as the Tihama. The town is small and low, with streets close to the shore and the open sea taking up much of the sheet.
From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, Mocha was a major port for the coffee trade. Beans grown in the Yemeni highlands were shipped from here to markets in the Middle East and Europe, and the town's name became linked with coffee itself. The mosque of al-Shadhili, associated with the saint linked to coffee in local tradition, remains a known landmark.
