Ascheberg lies in the Coesfeld district of the Münsterland, south of Münster. It is a municipality of several parts, Ascheberg itself, Herbern and Davensberg, each with its own small centre around a church. On a map these villages appear as compact clusters in a flat landscape of fields, hedgerows and scattered farmsteads. Country roads link them in long straight stretches.
The A1 autobahn passes close by and cuts a firm straight line through the rural pattern. Near Herbern stands Schloss Westerwinkel, a moated castle whose water-ringed grounds form one of the more unusual shapes in the area.
