Bayside lies on California's far northern coast, between Arcata and Eureka on the eastern side of Humboldt Bay. From above, the place is defined less by streets than by landscape. Tidal marshes and pasture spread along the bay's edge, and forested hills rise to the east. A handful of roads trace the space between the water and the trees.
That setting gives the map an unusual balance. The shoreline of Humboldt Bay cuts across one side of the frame, soft and irregular, while creeks wind down from the hills to the flats. Residential streets are few and spread out, often following the contours of the slope instead of any grid.
A Bayside map poster is mainly a portrait of land meeting water. In black and white, the bay becomes a broad calm shape and the roads become thin threads, so the drawing looks almost like a coastal chart.
