Belleville lies in Essex County, New Jersey, directly north of Newark, with the Passaic River forming its eastern edge. On a map the township is almost entirely built up, with a close grid of residential streets and a few main roads that run north and south, parallel to the river.
Route 21 follows the western bank of the Passaic, and the river itself makes a strong curving line along one side of the poster. Across the water lie neighbouring towns in Hudson and Bergen counties, linked to Belleville by bridges.
