Cento lies in the province of Ferrara in Emilia-Romagna, on the flat plain between Bologna and Ferrara, close to the Reno river. From above, the historic centre is a dense, roughly rectangular core with streets lined by arcades, surrounded by avenues that follow the line of its old defences, and beyond them, newer neighbourhoods and farmland.
Cento is known as the birthplace of the Baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Guercino, whose works are associated with the town. It is also known for its Carnival, one of the largest in Italy, twinned with the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro. In 2012, earthquakes in Emilia damaged several historic buildings in the town.
