Chaves sits in a wide valley in northern Portugal, a short distance from the Spanish border, with the river Tâmega running through it. From above the old town forms a dense knot of streets on the north bank, while newer districts spread across the flat valley floor. The river curves through the middle, and the line of the bridges pulls the two halves together.
The town's history goes back to Roman times, when it was known as Aquae Flaviae, and its thermal springs are still in use. The Roman bridge over the Tâmega, often called the Trajan Bridge, remains one of its best-known features. Above the old streets stands the keep of the medieval castle.
