Chongwe lies a short drive east of Lusaka, on the Great East Road that runs toward Eastern Province and the border with Malawi. From above, the town follows the highway closely. A commercial strip lines the road, and residential plots spread out on either side into open savanna and farmland. The Chongwe River, which gives the town and the district their name, passes nearby.
The district is largely agricultural and supplies produce to the capital. In recent years Chongwe has grown as Lusaka's metropolitan area pushes eastward. This gives the map an unfinished, evolving character, with planned plots and new roads extending into what was farmland not long ago. With little more than a road, a river and plots, the growth is easy to read from above.
