Città di Castello sits in the upper Tiber valley in northern Umbria. On a map the town is easy to read. A compact historic centre is still largely enclosed by its old walls, and the river runs just along its eastern side. Inside the walls, narrow streets connect a series of piazzas, churches and palaces. Outside, newer districts spread across the flat valley floor.
The town grew on the site of the Roman Tifernum Tiberinum and later flourished during the Renaissance. The young Raphael painted several early works for its churches. In the twentieth century it was the birthplace of the painter Alberto Burri, whose collections are displayed in the town. One is in a Renaissance palazzo, and the other is in former tobacco-drying sheds on the outskirts.

The Tiber passes right alongside the old town and continues through the flat valley. It is a long, calm line that sets the orientation of the whole map.
