Cleveland is the seat of Bradley County, about half an hour northeast of Chattanooga. It sits in the long valleys of the Appalachian ridge-and-valley region. On the map, a traditional downtown grid anchors the centre. Around it, residential streets bend to follow the low ridges, and commercial strips extend along the main highways. Interstate 75 passes on the western side, adding a firm diagonal to the edge of the composition.
The town is closely tied to two institutions. Lee University's campus lies near the historic centre, and Cleveland is also the international headquarters of the Church of God, a Pentecostal denomination. To the east, the land rises towards the Cherokee National Forest and the Ocoee River. Over a short distance the map's density fades from town blocks into forested ridges.
