Dorsten Map Poster
Dorsten lies on the northern edge of the Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the industrial region meets the farmland of the Münsterland. Its map is organised around two parallel waterways, the Lippe River and the Wesel-Datteln Canal. They run close together through the town from east to west and separate the old centre from the districts to the south.
At the heart of the town is a compact, oval old centre whose outline still follows its former fortifications. The streets inside the oval are short and tightly packed, and a ring of roads surrounds them. A Dorsten map poster shows this medieval shape clearly, framed by the broad bands of river and canal just beyond it.
Dorsten was long a coal-mining town, and former colliery sites are still part of its landscape. It is also home to the Jewish Museum Westphalia.
