Düren lies in North Rhine-Westphalia between Aachen and Cologne, on the Rur River where the flat Rhineland plain meets the foothills of the Eifel. From above, the city centre is a fairly compact area encircled by main roads, with streets radiating out toward the surrounding towns. The Rur runs along the eastern side in a green corridor, and industrial areas and railway lines spread across the flatter ground.
Düren was almost completely destroyed in an air raid in November 1944, and the centre was rebuilt in the post-war decades on a largely new plan. The city has long been known for its paper industry, and the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum houses a notable art collection. The Eifel reservoirs and forests lie within easy reach to the south.
