Fürstenfeldbruck grew up where an old salt road crossed the Amper, and the bridge that gave the town the second half of its name still explains its shape. On a map the river runs through in a gentle curve, the older streets cluster close to the crossing, and newer residential districts fan outward across the flat land west of Munich.
South of the centre lies the former Cistercian monastery of Fürstenfeld, whose large baroque church and rectangular courtyards appear as a compact, orderly block beside the river.
