Gersthofen sits directly north of Augsburg in Bavarian Swabia, on the east bank of the river Lech. The map is built from several strong parallel lines. The river and its accompanying canal run along one side of town, rail and main roads follow the valley, and the A8 motorway crosses nearby. Housing and commercial areas fill the spaces in between.
The town grew in the twentieth century around a large chemical works. Industrial land still takes up a big, clearly defined block on the map, with its own grid of access roads and sidings. Residential streets spread out from the older village centre in a mix of curving estates and straight postwar rows.
